Spring Commissioning on Long Island: Get on the Water Sooner

Every spring the same thing happens on Long Island: the weather turns, everyone wants their boat in the water at the same time, and schedules fill up. Owners who plan their spring commissioning early are the ones out on the water while everyone else is waiting.

Here's what spring commissioning covers and how to get ahead of the rush.

What "commissioning" means

Commissioning is reversing winterization and checking the boat over so it's safe and ready for the season. It's more than removing the shrink wrap and turning the key.

The engine and fuel system

  1. 1Reverse the winterization steps your engine manufacturer calls for.
  2. 2Check belts, hoses and clamps for cracks and wear.
  3. 3Check the raw-water pump and impeller. Impellers wear and harden over time, and a failed impeller means overheating.
  4. 4Check fuel lines, filters and water separators.
  5. 5Check fluid levels and look for leaks after the first start.
  6. 6Run the engines and watch temperature, pressure and charging.

Below the waterline

Before launch:

  • Check through-hull fittings and seacocks. Make sure they open and close.
  • Check hoses and clamps connected below the waterline.
  • Inspect anodes (zincs) and replace them if worn.
  • Check the hull, running gear and props for damage.

Electrical and electronics

  • Charge and test batteries, clean and tighten terminals.
  • Test the bilge pumps and float switches. This matters more than almost anything else.
  • Power up the electronics: displays, radios, autopilot, cameras, Starlink. Update software and check that everything talks to each other.
  • Test navigation lights and horns.

Water and sanitation systems

  • Flush the potable antifreeze out of the freshwater system.
  • Check the water heater, pumps and fixtures for leaks.
  • Bring the heads and holding system back into service.

Safety gear

  • Life jackets: right number, right sizes, good condition.
  • Fire extinguishers: charged and in date.
  • Flares and signaling devices: check expiration dates.
  • VHF radio: test it.
  • First aid kit: restocked.

Why booking early matters on Long Island

Spring is the busiest time of year for marine service around Long Island. Everyone wants to launch on the same warm weekends. Booking commissioning early, ideally in late winter, means:

  • Your boat is ready when the weather is
  • Problems found during commissioning can be fixed before the first trip, not after
  • Upgrades like new electronics can go in before the season starts

Plan upgrades with commissioning

If you've been thinking about Starlink, cameras, an autopilot or a repower, spring commissioning is the natural time, before the boat is in daily use. See Marine Electronics & Starlink and Engines & Repowers.

The bottom line

A good spring commissioning is the difference between a smooth first weekend and a first weekend at the dock waiting for parts. Plan it early and the season starts when you want it to.
